地名腦力激盪 Place-maned brainstorm

向來覺得台灣地名英譯對外國人極度不友善，當然對台灣人的

我們更是完全不了解，更不用說要我們拼出汐止、新營這樣的

英譯。



我曾經在網路上看到有人提出使用有意義的英文單字來命名地

名，這想法引起了我的迴響，但遲遲未跟大家分享，現在就讓

我來說明什麼是「使用有意義的英文單字來命名地名」。



首先發音要和中文發音相近，而且越相近越好，但是在特殊情

形也可以跳脫發音的限制；其次最好英譯字是有意義且好記；

最後，可以跟當地文化、景觀和歷史等有關聯的話會更好。



以下是我舉的兩個範例。

例如：

汐止 以See Z來命名。

從高空看汐止，有一道呈現Z字形的河流，和See Z不謀而合。 

 

新營 以Singing 來命名。

知名歌手鄭進一就是新營人，與Singing有關。

恆春 以Everspring來命名。(跳脫中文發音思維)

符合當地的氣候，也可以吸引外國人的興趣。

經過我的解說，現在換大家來腦力激盪一下，過一陣子我會把

大家的腦力激盪整理起來。

我已經進入考試衝刺期了，接下來我會慢慢減少上網時間，當

然Blog會停筆一陣子，單車日誌，我想要無限期延期了，哈哈

I always think that English names in Taiwan places are 

extremely not kind for foreigners; of course, Taiwanese 

totally do not understand them. That is no doubt that 

Taiwan can not spell out “Sighih” or “Sinying”.

However, someone ever proposed that using meaning English 

words to nameTaiwan places and this idea made me feel 

interested. Now, I want to share this idea with everybody. 

And then, I also illustrate what the method that using 

meaning English words to name Taiwan places is. 

First of all, the pronunciation should be similar between 

Chinese and English, and the more similar the better. This 

rule cannot be restricted in special cases.Second, the 

English words must be meaningful and rememberable.Finally, 

it is better that the English names are in relation to 

local culture, landscape, and history.

Under this line, I demonstrated three examples.



Example 1

“Sighih” is repalced with “See Z”.

There is a z-shape river in “Sighih” viewing in the air 

so”See Z” is a better name.

Example 2

“Sinying” is replaced with “Singing”.

A famous singer “Zheng Jinyi ” was born in Sinying;

therefore, “Singing” is a better name.

Example 3

“Hengchun” is replaced with “Everspring”.

This example is not restricted by pronunciation but

this new name is relative to local climate.

After I explained, everybody brainstormed,I will 

gather everyone’s ideas in some days.
