Black Friday

昨天是美國的Black Friday，這不是台灣所說的黑色星期五

(13號也是星期五)，台灣所說的黑色星期五在這裡稱13th 

Friday，那到底什麼是Black Friday?





Black Friday是感恩節的隔天，也就是11月的第四個星期四

的隔天，這天也被視為購物季的開始，在這天所有商店的資

產負債表都是顯是代表盈利的黑色，因此黑色星期五的名稱

由此而來。





在這一天也是消費者的天堂，幾乎所有的商品打五折以上，

我去看了LEVIS牛仔褲，原價54美金下殺31美金，200美金的

行李箱只賣100美金，但是搶便宜不是那麼容易的，通常商店

會在早上四五點就開門，而且低價商品限量，因此很多人凌

晨就去排隊了，一開門的情況就像台灣的搶頭香，因此很多

人就這樣受傷或死亡，我不喜歡人擠人的商店，因此我沒這

麼瘋狂得去排隊，重點是我沒錢shopping。

模擬練習一下托福考題，老師給的評價還不錯，A-

到是有一點要改進，要多使用synonyms(同義字)

for exmaple: motion, pictures, films代替movies

                     result, consequences代替effects

不諱言，這是我的weakness，懂的字很多，但不會用。



Topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Movies and televisions make more negative effects than positive effects on young people's behavior. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

  

Today, Movies and televisions are the most common media that we can get, and the information, which has both negative effects and positive effects, from these media influences us, especially the young people’s behavior. Moreover, I think that movies and television always have more negative effects than positive effects on young people's behavior. The reasons why I think that are: the many negative frames shown on both televisions and movies, the immaturity of young people in general, and the wrong imitation of television and movies of teenagers.

 

 

First of all, a lot of negative pictures have been broadcast, such as violent behavior, cheat, and illegal events. Teenagers who view these negative programs and movies frequently would probably think these negative events are right or commonplace. For example, when I was a teacher two year ago, a child I taught stole classmate’s money and lied to me and his parents. After knowing he stole the money, I asked him why he would do misbehaviors. Then, he said that the television news frequently reported the cheat of politicians and stealing of thieves, making him think these behaviors were right. Therefore, I believe that illegal events in the media have a bad influence on young people.

The immature mind of teenagers is also a crucial reason why I agree with the topic because they cannot accurately know what is right and what is wrong. For instance, I once heard of a dialogue of teenagers on the bus. They said that in the movies the ruffians who owned a gun with which he shot people is their idol because the actions is so attractive that they wanted to do that to the people they did not like. This dialogue pushed me to think movies and television teach teenagers too much about violence.

Finally, because of the wrong imitation of teenagers, I consider that movies and televisions make more negative effects than positive effects on young people's behavior. Teenagers imitate the behavior that appears in the media for no reason, but it may cause the serious damage. In our country, the news was reported that a high school student jumped from fifth floor and died just because he imitated an action showed in movies. To sum up, the news indicated that the wrong imitation of movies by young people is the major factor of the negative effects of televisions and movies.



        In conclusion, based on inappropriate media content, immature minds, and inaccurate imitation, I absolutely agree that movies and televisions make more negative effects than positive effects on young people's behaviors.

 

 

美國的消費~天堂與地獄

美國的消費不是開玩笑的，但也很像在跟我開玩笑。





昨天心血來潮去Boston的Downtown逛逛，看到很多東

西的價錢真得是傻眼，而且心中還會暗暗罵shit!!不

過同樣罵shit!!心境感覺卻是不一樣的。





第一次心中罵髒話是看到電腦傳輸線，在台灣大USB

轉小USB 得線了不起50元就很貴了，這邊呢。沒有10

元美金是買不到的，天阿~





同樣的商店，看到耳機上的軟塞，就是有分大中小的

size的內耳軟塞，我之前在台灣買只要35~50元，這邊

也是10美金起跳，天阿，真是高物價的美國。SHIT!!





食物在美國也是貴得不得了，一個餐外帶，5~7元算便

宜了，不過有些的份量很大，可以吃兩餐，所以算下來

只要不吃得很好很好，還有多多自己煮，基本上，一個

月300美金是綽綽有餘的，但是在美國誰不會去PARTY，

誰不會去吃餐館，所以300元已經是基本門檻啦。





不過也有讓我看到東西，心中暗暗罵SHIT!!不過卻是驚

喜的。我在Downtown看到一間商店，覺得很像百貨公司

的樣子，所以就走了進去，沒想到是衣服的大賣場，剛

開始覺得沒什麼，不過仔細的看了一下，都是台灣的運

動用品高級貨，向是Nike,Puma，也有知名品牌DNKY,

Tommy。像運動短褲16美元有找，長褲20美元有找，不錯

的運動外套也是20美元有找，真的超級吸引人。名牌的

外套衣服也是20美金左右，哇~要不是要省錢，我早就

花大錢買回台灣賣了。

The lower temperature

整整一週沒上網更新內容，因為這週是期末考(final exam)，

加上週六的托福考試，讓我沒時間上網看東看西，更別說是更

新網誌。





這週剛好是我來波士頓的最低溫度，溫度大多維持在33度F~18

度F，忘記華氏如何轉換攝氏，沒關係，我教大家兩個感覺溫

度的方法。第一，在18度F的溫度下待3分鐘，然後馬上打開冰

箱的冷凍庫，這時會感覺冰箱冷凍庫吹出來的空氣是溫的。第

二，在18度F的溫度下待3分鐘，在摸摸自己的臉，會發現自己

的臉已經沒有感覺了。這樣應該知道18度F大概是幾度C了吧。





要講正經事了，那就是華氏(F)跟攝氏(C)的轉換，轉換公式如

下：F=32+C*(9/5)，也就是攝氏乘以五分之九，在加上32就是

華氏。或者，華氏減32，再乘九分之五。不過為了計算方便，

這邊通常都是華氏減32，再除以二。





正解，18度F=-7.78度C，冷爆了，但是冷的感覺超級棒的，頭

腦得思考會變得很清楚。

在美國到處可以看到台灣的影子，也可以說台灣到處充滿

美國的影子，原因為何，台灣很多事物仿效美國的腳步，

他山之石，可以攻錯。





但是很多事情台灣仿效美國，卻是大錯特錯，其中大家耳

熟能詳的就是公路主義。美國是公路主義的國家，所以大

眾運輸系統除了在大城市不錯外，其他都不是太好，發展

公路主義的美國是因為國家太廣闊，而且居民居住地點十

分分散，所以發展大眾運輸成本會高於公路運輸。





台灣也學到了，不過只學到後半段─發展大眾運輸成本會

高於公路運輸，卻完全沒學到美國決定成為公路主義的思

考原因，導致台灣一昧的發展公路主義，導致大眾運輸經

費被排擠，因而使得現今的交通面臨考驗。





以上只是個例子，其實台灣有許多不錯的交通建設是真正

站在巨人的肩膀上構想出來的，台北與高雄捷運就真的很

棒，覺得爛的人來波士頓坐坐捷運吧。





他山之石，可以攻錯，不是要去學習別人做事的方法，而

是要去學習別人在哪些環境下，運用什麼原理，發展出這

些做事的方法。所以要學的不是別人的方法，而是思考，

講更深一點，是思考背後的思考。



有人問我我怎麼背單字，我說用句子或文章背英文單字，

但這是方法。真希望有人問我為什麼你要發展出用句子或

文章背英文單字？原因為何？這才是真正的他山之石。

2008 Daylight Saving Time finished

今天早上美國多了一個小時，因為2008日光節約時間(DST)結束。





什麼是日光節約時間(DTS)，大多台灣人都不知道，因為台灣現在

並沒有這樣的制度，不過曾經有實施過，只是最近的一次實施時間

是在民國68年，所以大多人都不知道。重點是台灣緯度(latitude)

並不算高，所以也沒有必要施行。





所以之前Boston時間比台灣時間慢12小時，經過日光節約時間(DST)

結束，變成比台灣慢13小時了。舉例來說，之前台灣是星期二晚上

八點，我這邊的時間就是星期二早上八點。現在假如台灣時間是星

期二晚上八點，我這邊的時間就是星期二早上七點。





那日光節約時間是什麼時候開始？什麼時候結束？給大家長長知識，

各國訂定日期不一致，不過以美國來說，開始的時間是三月第二個

星期日開始，十一月第一個星期日結束，在這段時間都是日光節約

時間，也就是說時間會往前跑一個小時，六點變成七點。因為太陽

會比較早出現，時間往前跑一個小時可以讓大家早起，運用太陽的

光，以便節省能源。

無意間發現大學做的專題

昨天上網以自己的名字google一下，

沒想到無意間發現大學跟老師合作的專題，

刊載在科學教育月刊303期，2007年10月，

現在再重新看一次，Oh~ I felt embarrassed，

第一次覺得自己的幼稚，不過卻也是新鮮的經驗。





仔細看的人會覺得有點奇怪，問卷是2002年，

為什麼published的時間是在2006年，

這中間就真得對老師感到很不好意思。

因為大學太混了，光問卷統計我就花了一年，

寫稿再花半年，到了大學畢業前夕才完成初稿，

中間實習跟準備考試，一直都擱置了。

直到2006年才又跟老師搭上線，

把最後完稿交由老師修改，因此才得以刊登，

不然這個專題早已石沉大海，真的很感謝楊老師。



這專題題目與當初訂定得不一樣，

my suggestion about the language center

很久沒有寫網誌了，我不是像林警官建銘那樣忙著於愛情，

哈哈！實在是語言學校的課太重了，每天幾乎寫作業寫到半

夜12點。好不容易第一階段結數有三天假，可以偷閒來寫網

誌。



想出國念語言學校該如何選學校，這基於你的目的是什麼？

純粹玩樂交朋友？想學好英文？如果是前者，越接近好玩的

城市越好，如果是後者選語言學校就很重要了。



首先要注重語言學校的品質。我念了一個月聽到很多從別的

語言學校轉來的學生，他們說他們之前的學校根本就是在玩

的，學語言是其次。如果要學好語言先選擇不是那麼好玩的

城市，遠離他們吧！但是如果語言學校資訊充分的話，自制

能力也不錯的話，好玩的城市中的"好"語言學校反而會有很

多機會讓你開口講英文。



其次，選擇和自己講相同語言的人少的地方，除非自制能力

很充足，否則來到國外還是有一半的時間在講中文，天啊！

那乾脆在家鄉學英文就好了，所以選擇會講中文的人很少的

語言學校，不知道選哪裡，美國中西部就是了，不然別去大

城市也是可以的。像我現在中午午餐時間，就會看到十幾個

人在教室裡用中文聊天，這真的無助於學習語言，像我不論

遇到會不會講中文的人，我都只用英文跟他聊天，即便我講

得很爛，但是敢講敢被批評就一定會有進步，因為只要有沒

用過或不熟的單字或片語讓你丟過一次臉，你這輩子就會記

住它了。miracle，之前我聽力不認識你，現在我記住你了，

因為我丟臉了，哈哈。





選於言學校千萬別完全相信代辦中心，他們的推薦都會有獎

金可以拿，所以他們有時會推薦獎金比較高的學校，問過來

人比較重要，但是也不是所有的都是如此，我的代辦中心就

是善良的，像是我之前想選的學校代辦中心就不建議我選，

他們建議我選另外一所，後來我發現我之前想去的學校就是

玩樂出名的學校。

Anyway,外國生活真的時一言難盡，體會也各有不同，看別人

的文章與聽別人的經驗都無法真正體會，來住上半年就會有不

同的想法，但是先決條件就是不能太封閉自己，要多跟外國人

的社會接觸。

這是我寫作期末考考題，下面是我訂正過的答案，歡迎給我建議。



Topic: What do you think about the use of conventiona medications such as 

aspirin and antibiotics versus natural remedies such as vitamins and herbs?





        When people are sick, some of them wanted the conventional medications

such as aspirin and antibiotics, but others chose the natural remedies  such as 

vitamins and herbs. In my opinion, I prefer natural remedies and there are two

important factors why I chose the natural remedies as the cure: the natural remedies

are beneficial and the natural remedies are good enough for cure.



        First of all, choosing natural remedies is more benneficial than choosing 

conventional medications because natural remedies are less harmful for people

bodies than conventional medications. According to the medicine books, 

all of the medicine have the side effects which  cause little damage to bodies,

althought it can help people to recover. However, the natural remedies do not have 

any toxic marerials when people take them as treatments. Therefore, I thought that the 

natural ramedies are better than the conventional medicatios because of their 

benefits.



        It is true even though few people  know the fact that using medicine is not 

necessaryto cure people who are sick. The bodies have antibodies which can 

kill viruses and bacteria and can help people to recover. However, the medicine just

make people feel more confortable when they are sick. If people can have enough 

nutrition such as vitamins and protein, people bodies will recover themself. To sum up,

natural remedies are good enough to help people who are sick become healthy.



        According to these two factors: the health and ineffectiveness, I believe the fact that

natural remedies are better than convetional treatments.
